Regret

The haunting shadow of another life--
a different time, a different wife

Lives in the corner and plays faint songs
that fill the space where joy belongs.

Question:  Do we really have complete freedom to choose?

Michael F. Mercurio writes:

"I've noticed that the primary theme of your pages is the unwavering power of choice.  But, does everyone really have a choice in everything, or are we limited by who we are as people?  For example, do I really have the choice to violently kill someone for no reason?  Knowing who I am and how I have been conditioned, I don't think I could do it.  Does that mean I don't really have a choice?"

"I was taught that God is omnipotent and knows every choice we will make even before we were born.  But I was also taught that the souls of dead, unrepentant sinners go to hell.  Does this mean God creates a man knowing full well he will murder someone, and then sends him to hell for doing it?  If the outcome is already known by a higher entity, then free choice is an illusion, and we are stuck making whatever choices we were designed to make. And so God, then, must also be an immoral creature for having created us to choose evil."

"In the heart of the waiter
lives the ghost of a king
serving fresh dignity
in each dish they bring."
       El Pais de las Hadas

Si una fuerza prematura se lleva
en ti una parte de mi alma
que hago yo que soy la otra?
La menos amada
un dia mismo traera a ambos la ruina
adondequiera me precedas
los dos iremos
caminantes dispuestos a hacer juntos
el viaje sin retorno.

The Land of Faeries

If a premature force takes with you
a part of my soul, what am I to do?
For I am the other part,
the less loved part.
One day, it will bring us both ruin.
Wherever you may precede me,
we shall both go together,
travelers willing to go together
on a journey of no return.
